A bit disappointed with Macks. The ribs were
certainly meaty, but not very smokey. I wonder if they boil or steam them.
Juicy meat, but watery juicy. Sauce just poured on after the fact. Corn
bread dense and chewy. Mac n Cheese grainy. Still, I ate it.

October 28, 2011 at

Makes me mad and I wasn't even there. What are
options? Squeeze it anyhow? Throw it in his face? Probably no good options
except to call a flight attendant.

Similar to the folks that put up their own bag then
close the door to try to pretend it's full.

October 28, 2011 at
1:19 pm
I really hit a nerve with this. In the end the young
guy said "oh no" and jammed his bag in there. I thought there might be
fireworks on landing but nothing happened.
October 28, 2011 at
2:51 pm
Did the young guy say "oh no" as in "oh no?" as in
"oh no? you think I'm not gonna squeeze it?" ?
October 28, 2011 at
3:13 pm
or like 'oh no you
don't (you old geezer!)'
October 28, 2011 at
3:17 pm
It's become almost standard for the flight attendants
to say something like "please put your bag in on its side / wheels out /
etc. and please put bags in first and then lay coats and other soft items
on top of them".
October 28, 2011 at
3:32 pm
I would've just said "oops sorry" and crammed my bag
in.
October 28, 2011 at
5:21 pm
@Doug - Hah. That's pretty much how it went.
October 28, 2011 at
9:16 pm
A friend of mine was boarding a flight somewhere in
The South (or maybe Texas - whatever) and people had put their bags into
the bin sloppily so he rearranged the bags (putting the bags on their
sides and generally making them fit in the space more efficiently) to make
room for his own bag. When he was almost finished he heard the young woman
behind him say (in her best Southern Belle accent) "And here I had thought
that gentlemanly behavior was a thing of the past.". She appeared to be
fit and had no apparent disabilities, and she seemed to be pushing her
carry-on wheelie bag in his direction. He laughed at her and proceeded, as
planned, to put his bag in the space he had created for himself :-)

Assembly time...

Netflix, wow, what
a punishing market ride. Why split their two businesses? I wonder if this
is a possible explanation... A DVD rental company can buy DVDs and rent
them to anyone under the first-sale doctrine. A streaming business needs
to get licenses from the content owners to stream their content. The "old"
Netflix is both, and that became a problem.
In January 2010 it was reported that Netflix agreed to delay shipping newly released DVDs for a time - in exchange a certain content owner would license the Netflix streaming business. Netflix DVD customers complained that the newest DVD releases were not available from Netflix DVD for 30 days. The DVD-only competition does not have this 30 day restriction.
With the split of business lines Qwikster can ship newly released DVDs without any waiting period; it can run unfettered by negotiations over streaming licenses. New DVD releases might be available on Qwikster the day after they are released to retail sales. In other words, Qwikster customers might get a *better* experience than the old Netflix DVD service.
The Netflix streaming service is now able to negotiate licenses with the content owners without the complication of a DVD business. How will the new streaming-only Netflix compete against other streaming-only companies? Perhaps Netflix management feels they can beat the competition with a superior user experience. Maybe not superior communication, but delivery of video is what we really all pay for.
Just looking for some rational explanation.

Now some speculation on the WSJ that Amazon wants to
buy the Netflix streaming business but they don't want the DVD business -
the physical DVD distribution warehouses would expose Amazon to state
sales tax. Interesting idea. I like mine better.
September 22, 2011 at

We could apply Occam's Razor to this discussion. Is
it likely that they have some nefarious complicated secret scheme or could
they just be stupid?
September 22, 2011 at
11:26 am
In today's LA Times: "...some studios that make
Netflix.. wait until 28 days after a DVD goes on sale before they can
offer it for rent want to lengthen that delay. They believe such a move
will encourage consumers to pay more to buy or rent a movie digitally."
Interesting. Once Netflix is split into two companies these studios won't
have any leverage over the Qwikster DVD business.

If Rick Perry and
his advisers don't believe in evolution, then we should not believe
anything about his economic program. Clearly his thought process is not
fact based. We need economic programs that are effective; not ones that
someone spins up based on weird theories of how the economy works.
Republicans need to bring out a candidate with some real smarts.

Most macro economics is not fact based anyway. They
like to do some pseudo math that doesn't actually add up. This is why most
universities group econ with the arts and not with math. But, Perry does
seem like yet another whacko politician. I have a friend though who
believes that many politicians just act stupid in order to get elected.
Interesting hypothesis don't you think?
September 10, 2011 at
3:05 pm
@D : Huntsman seems the best of a bad lot (and Romney
might be passable too) but I'm still not happy when people say they
"believe in" evolution. Evolution is not a belief system. It is a natural
process that is continually happening regardless of what Perry or Huntsman
believe.
@John: That is an interesting hypothesis, though I'm not sure how you would test it. It's a sad commentary on American culture that this is even plausible. However, I'm still pretty sure Sarah Palin really is that dumb.

PLEASE post this as
your status if you know someone who has been eaten by Penguins. Penguins
are nearly unstoppable and, when hungry, also breathe fire. 71% of people
won't copy this into their status because they have already been eaten by
Penguins. Another 28% won't because they are hiding in their showers with
fire extinguishers awaiting the coming Penguinapocalypse. The remaining 1%
are awesome & will re-post.

@Chuck, My biggest concern was over the automatic
Picasa integration. I have ALL my photos in Picasa now, and mostly marked
private. I use Picasa auto tag all the time. If someone is tagged in one
photo, then they can see the whole album. Some of my albums are date
based. For example, if "June 2002". If a person is tagged in a picnic
photo from early June 2002, then they can also peruse all the photos of my
grandfather's funeral - not what I intended. With FB I am certain which
photos will be seen by others; with G+ I couldn't be sure.
August 3, 2011 at 5:50
am
I am not a Picasa user but it is a good warning sign
that there may be other surprises somewhere under the hood. There is
always a balance between ease of use & features and privacy. Sounds
like Google got the mix wrong on this one.

Just tried to buy
airfare with our United vouchers for being bumped. "just like cash" we
were told. Bull. Ripped off again by United Airlines. Next time we won't
agree to be bumped.

Hope it doesn't
come to this - but it would be cool.

Skype rang while I
was at the tire store. Was my far distant uncle that I haven't spoken with
in years. He looked startled when I said hello. He didn't know he had
video called me! His first skype experience. He was amazed as I walked him
down the street. His wife ducked into camera range and said, "boy that's
something. They said we'd be able to do this in the future." The future is
here.

Streamed Ip Man. A
good Kung Fu movie. More story, less fighting than I expected.

Thanks for the movie review - I'll have to look into
that.
